We’re back…      pumpkin
Hello once again to all!  I know its been a while, so please accept our apologies for the absence of the summer edition of the Steelhead Matters.  The summer season proved to be a very busy one for all of us and a lot has been accomplished.  Read on further to get an update of the Community Hall Project, the summer BBQ, upcoming fundraisers and other interesting information.

Autumn is now upon us.  I’m beginning to notice smoke curling out of people’s chimneys and the smell of woodburning fires in the air.  So we trust that you all had a terrific summer and hope you enjoy reading the fall edition of Steelhead Matters.

Community Hall Project Update
scaProgress is being made in our efforts to build a community hall and let me assure you, a lot of hard work is being done behind the scenes by many dedicated volunteers.  We are still going through the process of making sure everything is in order for the District of Mission to grant us a building permit, but in the meantime, our septic field has been put in and signed off on approval.  Special thanks go out to Barry Dahl and Bob Bellwood for their help and expertise in this part of the project.  Thank you both and everyone else who was involved.

A small ground-breaking ceremony was held on Saturday July 28 with Mission Mayor James Atebe giving a lovely, heartfelt speech and then officially digging out the first shovelful of earth.  Also, specifically in attendance, was Doreen Cameron, a pioneer resident of Steelhead, who was thrilled to be a part of this history in the making.  Several other members of the community were also present to witness this very exciting step.

Several work bees have also been held, including a couple that took place on the property at Bonnie Harber’s, to retrieve the many trees that blew down during last winter’s severe windstorms.  She has graciously donated her trees to be used as posts in the construction of the hall, so special thanks goes out to Bonnie for that, and also to the hard-working logging crew.

The building site has since been excavated, with the dig being done by Paul Roberts, a long-time community member.  Thank you so much Paul, it looks great!

Next was a work-bee held on August 18th to build the footings as the first step to the foundation.  Attendance was strong on a beautiful day, what a wonderful display of community spirit!  Thank you to all who came out to lend a hand and show your support, and special thanks to Moira Bush and Jody Simon for providing lunch for the volunteers.  Lastly, huge thanks must go out to the builders team, namely Roger Pells, Mark Diamond, Larry Colby, Dan Simon, Paul Roberts and Greg Hart.  This group of dedicated and tireless volunteers have been instrumental in all aspects of this project.  Keep up the excellent work everybody!!

Who Would Do This?!

graphicA few weeks ago it was noticed that some ne’r-do-well had so ungraciously dropped off their huge pile of garbage on the site of our new community hall.  We called the District of Mission and they promptly removed it for us.  In light of this situation, we are looking for some temporary or portable fencing that we can erect during the building phase of this project so this does not happen again.  If you can help with this, please call Terri at 826-2692.

Website Update
www.steelheadcommunity.com

website graphicAbout a year ago, the person who beautifully created and maintained our website moved from the neighbourhood and could no longer commit to this task.  It has taken us this long to find someone willing and able to take over this very important job.  We have been diligently working on refreshing and updating this community website as we feel it is a very valuable tool in keeping the lines of communication open for everyone who lives here.  We are confident that you will refer to it many times as a means of keeping abreast of community activities and developments. So, check it out and let us know what you think of our website!  Your feedback and contributions are important to us!

Community Signboard

SignboardHave you noticed our new community signboard on the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and Cardinal Street.  The board and letters have been generously donated to us by ARNOLD’S RENTALS in Mission, who by the way, have been simply amazing in their show of support for us thus far.  We think this will be a beneficial tool for us to communicate to you as to the latest goings-on, so please keep your eyes on the board to see what’s coming up, or how you can get involved!

  Read All About It!
read news graphicnewspaperDid you notice the wonderful newspaper coverage that the Steelhead Community received this past summer?  Starting with the fantastic story on our long awaited ground-breaking day with the Mayor to the super-fun community BBQ held in August.

Then there was the beautifully-done piece on long-time pioneer residents of Steelhead, Pike and Doreen Cameron, and the trail and pond that has been created for them by the Mission Tree Farm’s Bob O’Neal and his crew, as a legacy to their history here.  You can find it by driving to the end of Johnson Street and parking at the gate.  You then hike up the new gravel logging road about 1 km.  On the left hand side of the road you will notice two handmade wooden signs on trees noting Pike’s Pond and Doreen’s Trail.  The trail is about a 15 minute walk and is not too difficult with a couple of picnic tables and resting benches along the way, coming out to an end at the road.  It is a lovely place to visit and I encourage you to check it out!
Carol Aun, a local reporter for the Fraser Valley Record is responsible for all of this recent exposure.  She is also a very strong supporter of the Steelhead Community Association and what we are trying to accomplish here, so we must thank her for all her help and for being so Steelhead friendly!

  2nd Annual SCA Barbeque
bbqThe 2nd annual Steelhead BBQ was held at the home of Al & Barb Thomas.  Thanks go to them for once again hosting this very fun event.  A variety of activities were planned, ranging from kids games and crafts, to a very fun game for the adults as well!  One particular event that proved to be very popular with everyone was the axe-throwing contest, and so our thanks go out to Greg Hart for setting us up with that and to Christina Hart for making and donating a beautiful filled driftwood planter for our raffle.  There was a wonderful assortment of delectable dishes that were provided by everyone for our potluck barbeque.  Well done, and thank you for all who came out and supported this community event.  Do tell your friends what a great time you had and we’ll be sure to have an even greater turnout next year!
