Upcoming Community Events!

3rd ANNUAL STEELHEAD BBQ & FAMILY FUN DAY

The theme this year in keeping with an Olympic year is, of course, The Steelhead Extra Special Olympics!  Start thinking of what country you and your family will represent and join us for a fun-filled day of Olympic events. The Olympic games will start at 3:30 p.m. sharp with the kids games first and adult fun following!  There will be hamburgers and hotdogs for sale and beverages available.  Please bring a dish from your "country" to add to the potluck table, which is always packed with amazing fare!  This event is kindly being hosted by Al and Barb Thomas - follow the balloons to Thomas Avenue - and will be held on Saturday August 16, 2008, beginning at 3:30 p.m. RAIN OR SHINE!!!  Don't miss this great family event!!!

FIRST ANNUAL STEELHEAD GOLF TOURNAMENT REPORT

The first annual Steelhead Golf Tournament was held on May 24, 2008, at Cedar Ridge Golf Centre and was a raging success!!  The sun shone brightly on close to 40 eager golfers of varying skills, including the dubious golfers, all smiling wide and having a fabulous time.  Coolers filled with refreshments and snacks were waiting on the 9th hole, which did their job and re-energized the wilting golfers!  Novelty holes dotted the course with hilarious adversity, such as replacing your golf club with a tennis raquet to get your ball over water hazards (or not), and mallets and hockey sticks for putting!!!  A wonderful potluck barbeque was hosted after the event at Roger and Lana's on Cardinal Street, followed with a bonfire, which rang in the spring/summer season very effectively!  This event was so much fun and enjoyed by all that we are already looking forward to next year!

COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY REPORT

The District of Mission Community Tree Planting Day proved to be a very informative event plus lots of fun for the many people from all over Mission that attended!  The District of Mission hosted a hike and a party for their Municipal Tree Farm's 50th Anniversary, in which those who attended participated in planting a legacy tree, guided tours around Pike's Pond and Doreen's Trail, a visit from Smoky the Bear, refreshments including hot dogs, chips, beverages and a wonderful tree-covered cake, as well as take-home souveniers of the tree farm including pencils and cups and balloons!  Thanks to Bob O'Neal and the crew from the DoM Municipal Tree farm for hosting such a successful community event!

DID YOU KNOW...?

Did you know that if you cover your load when travelling to the District of Mission Landfill you will receive a $2 discount deducted from your total! Did you know that the District of Mission Landfill is initiating an incentive to recycle program, with a three-month grace period, where a 50% surcharge will be added to landfill fees where recyclables are determined to be in your dumpload, rather than separated and deposited in the recycling section of the landfill.

PIKE'S POND AND DOREEN'S TRAIL

This is a new trail dedicated to two Steelhead pioneers.  Pike and Doreen Cameron are two of Steelhead's longest living residents and have seen the community grow and transform over the course of more than 60 years.  Pike was born in a small house just off Dewdney Trunk Road and grew up just down the street from where he resides today on Johnson Street. Pike met and married Doreen in 1935 and they moved into that house Pike's Dad built which he gave to the newlyweds and where they have raised their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pike worked in the forestry department for the District of Mission in a life-long career and knows nearly every road built in the municipal forest because it was he who built them.  Earlier this year, as part of Mission's continual effort to encourage local recreation and protect the environment, the District had a trail and pond built by inmates from Fraser Correctional Centre and named them after Pike and Doreen.  There is a story told of how years ago Doreen took her grandsons for a hike in the forest and ended up getting lost and so she now will always be able to find her way home.  Long ago, beavers dammed up a pond that was washed away just this past winter during the heavy rains, so it was built up again making it part of the trail and named Pike's pond.

The trail begins about 700 metres past the forestry gates at the end of Johnson Road just up the street from where Pike and Doreen still live.  The trail itself, which goes around the pond and back onto the logging road, is about half a kilometre in length.  It is an easy hike with a number of rest spots and a picnic bench by the pond.  Bob O'Neal, manager from the District of Mission's Forestry Department says "these wetlands are a valuable habitat and we try to protect them".   Please leave nature as you have found it and pack out any litter you find or bring.  The area is still a working tree farm and is open on weekends but check for closures during the week.

LOOK WHAT'S NEW

The Steelhead Community Association's Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday June 24th at the site of our new hall.  The meeting began with the reading of the board report, which brought us up to date on the past year's activity and progress, followed by the financial report, community hall update, membership drive, and a fun game of Pictionary put on by social convenors Pixie and Trixie to recap the past year's social events.  During the open floor segment of the meeting, the main topic of discussion seemed to be on crime and Community Block Watch, and what we can do to keep the lines of communication open.  You can read about the AGM in its entirety in the Minutes posted here .

Elections were also held to determine who would take on the challenges of the 2008/2009 year.  We had one board member retire from her position as Director, and so we would like to take this time to thank Laura Halldorson for all of her hard work and support during her four years on the Board.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the community who took time from their busy lives to attend our AGM and show your support! It was great to see some new faces this year.

The current Board of Directors as elected for the 2008/2009 year is as follows:

Terri Cameron Chair
Cindy Diamond Co-Chair
Jana Tennant Secretary
George Nickerson Treasurer
Roger Pells  Director
Bonnie Harber Director
Christina Hart   Director
Lana Gowler Director
Jody Simon  Social Convenor

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIPS DUE!

It is that time of the year again! Steelhead Community Memberships are now due. Your membership dues will be used to keep alive a collective voice that will ensure the community’s concerns stay on the local government’s agenda and that Steelhead receives its fair share of municipal revenues for road improvements, snow removal, etc. Through continual fundraising efforts and your membership fees, we can also have reserves for social events, area improvements, and of course, our Community Hall. These are just a few of the ideas, and with strong community involvement we can accomplish many more. Attached to this newsletter is your new membership form. The fee is $10 per family, paid once yearly. We encourage you to support your community by filling out the form, pop it in an envelope along with the $10 fee, and then you can drop it off in the locked suggestion box at the mailboxes on Cardinal Street, which will be checked daily. The Steelhead Community Association would like to thank you in advance for your participation and support in the 2008 membership drive.

GOOD NEWS!!

The Steelhead Community Association has just been awarded a $10,000 Community Grant from the District of Mission.  Our thanks to Mission Council; this really puts us closer to reaching our goal for the hall!

COMMUNITY HALL PROJECT UPDATE

Please watch the sign board on the corner of Cardinal Street and Dewdney Trunk Road for future work bees throughout the summer and fall.  We really need the communities support during this busy time for this project to succeed!

Excitement is growing around Steelhead these days!  Construction has been under way and we are rarin' to get as much done while the weather is good.  After what could have been a shaky start (brr...cold, due to lingering snow) our first work bee of the season was held on March 29th 2008, and what a fine turn out it was!  About a dozen dedicated volunteers came out to help with some final forming and backfilling, etc. and spirits were high.  A few more work parties have taken place since then, which now brings us to having our floor on and the work on the logs has begun.  Needless to say, we will be needing your help now, more than ever.  In order to get the hall to the "lockup" phase by fall, a lot more work will have to be done, so please pitch in and help create this legacy for our community.  The hard work and effort we put forth this summer and fall will be reflected in the pride we feel when we stand back and admire the beautiful new hall that we all helped to build.  It was sure nice to see some new faces at the work bees; thank you to George Taylor, Craig Piche, and Wayne McKean for coming out to lend a hand, and of course to the lovely ladies who provide nourishment to our hard-working crews.

Naturally it goes without saying, but we will;  Thanks to all the regulars who continue to come out, ready to work hard, time and time again!

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR

As the days and evenings are now warmer and longer, people in the neighbourhood will be out taking a stroll, riding their bikes, or walking their dogs.  Please be a good neighbour and ensure that your own dogs are secured in your yards so that we all can enjoy the neighbourhood without worrying about encountering an unfriendly dog along the way.  Nothing can ruin a pleasant outing faster than an aggressive dog charging out onto the road at you.  The Steelhead Community Association appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

HELP KEEP STEELHEAD CLEAN!

Unfortunately the flyers, inserts and garbage currently being left in the box provided by a well meaning resident is overflowing and blowing around.  With no scheduled removal, the refuse overfills and attracts bears as well as being an eyesore.  We would LOVE to hear from anyone who would be interested in organizing a rotating schedule for volunteer daily garbage removal.  Please call 604-826-2692 if you can help!!  In the meantime, the bin will be removed.  Kindly take mail inserts, etc. home to recycle!!  Thank you!
