future Steelhead Community Hall
Future vision for Community Hall.

The vision of a Community Hall in Steelhead has been nurtured in the minds of it's residents for more than a decade. Pioneers in our community fondly remember the days of getting to know their neighbours in the old schoolhouse.

In May 2004, the quasi-defunct Steelhead Association was resurrected and the work began on making that vision a reality.

Community Hall Project Update Summer 2009.

We are pleased to report that there has been great progress on the hall with work bees running every weekend pretty much now that summer has arrived!  The roof is coming along with the metal soon to be up.  The siding is being dip-stained and will soon go up as well. The time leading up to the summer months was very busy with much being scheduled and accomplished.

It has indeed been a long haul, but again, your patience and faith in us is truly appreciated and your support is what keeps us going, and we’ll take all we can get, be that dropping by the hall with muffins for the crew, your words of encouragement, and as always, your help at any of the work bees will never be turned down. Keep watching the signboard or just drop in at any workbee-in-progress! Thanks again, and see you at the hall!

Community Hall Project Update Summer 2008.

Excitement is growing around Steelhead these days!  Construction has been under way and we are rarin' to get as much done while the weather is good.  After what could have been a shaky start (brr...cold, due to lingering snow) our first work bee of the season was held on March 29th 2008, and what a fine turn out it was!  About a dozen dedicated volunteers came out to help with some final forming and backfilling, etc. and spirits were high.  A few more work parties have taken place since then, which now brings us to having our floor on and the work on the logs has begun.  Needless to say, we will be needing your help now, more than ever.  In order to get the hall to the "lockup" phase by fall, a lot more work will have to be done, so please pitch in and help create this legacy for our community.  The hard work and effort we put forth this summer and fall will be reflected in the pride we feel when we stand back and admire the beautiful new hall that we all helped to build.  It was sure nice to see some new faces at the work bees; thank you to George Taylor, Craig Piche, and Wayne McKean for coming out to lend a hand, and of course to the lovely ladies who provide nourishment to our hard-working crews.

Naturally it goes without saying, but we will;  Thanks to all the regulars who continue to come out, ready to work hard, time and time again!

Community Hall Project Update - Spring 2008

As you will have noticed if you have driven by the hall site, there has been no progress since last fall's snow, which does not seem to want to melt this year! Alas, the spirit was definitely willing, but the weather was certainly not. Even now with the remains of a good layer of snow, fear not, work on the hall will be resuming as soon as possible. Keep your eyes on the signboard at the corner of Dewdney & Cardinal, as we will be posting all future work bees there. We hope you are as eager to get going again as we are. There are many ways you can help, and we strongly encourage you to come out and join us and become involved in this very exciting project that promises to be a great addition to our community!

Great achievements are nurtured with the cooperation of many minds with a common vision working toward a common goal.

COMMUNITY HALL PROJECT UPDATE - October, 2007

Progress is being made and a lot of hard work is being done behind the scenes by many dedicated volunteers. We are still going through the process of making sure everything is in order for the District of Mission to grant us a building permit, but in the meantime our septic field has been installed, and signed off on approval. Special thanks go out to Barry Dahl and Bob Bellwood for their help and expertise in this part of the project, thank you both and to everyone else who was involved.

A small ground-breaking ceremony was held on Saturday July 28, 2007, with Mission Mayor James Atebe giving a lovely heartfelt speech and then officially digging out the first shovelful of earth. Among those in attendaence, was Doreen Cameron, one of the pioneer residents of Steelhead, who was thrilled to be a part of this history in the making. Several other members of the community were also present to witness this very exciting step.

Several work-bees have been held, including a couple that took place on the property of Bonnie Harber's to retrieve the many trees that blew down during last winter's severe windstorms. She has graciously donated her trees to be used as posts in the construction of the hall, so special thanks go out to Bonnie for that, and also to the hard-working logging crew.

The building site has since been excavated, with the dig being done by Paul Roberts, a long-time community member. Thank you so much Paul, it looks great!

Next was a work-bee held on August 18 to build the footings as the first step for the foundation. Attendance was strong on a beautiful day; what a wonderful display of community spirit! Thank you to all who came out to lend a hand and show your support, and special thanks to Moira Bush and Jody Simon for providing lunch for the volunteers.

A huge thanks must go out to the "builders team" which consists of Roger Pells, Mark Diamond, Larry Colby, Dan Simon, Paul Roberts, and Greg Hart. This group of dedicated and tireless volunteers have been instrumental in all aspects of this project. Keep up the excellent work everybody and  together we shall build this hall!
